The F Word
We were approached in september 2009 by the F WORD production coordinator to supply one of our units for use in the 'F WORD' series. We delivered and sited a 20 bird unit to Janet Street Porter's smallholding in
North Yorkshire.

Series 5: Janet Street-Porter’s Mixed Grill
Gordon Ramsay has asked journalist, author and passionate foodie Janet Street-Porter to raise three different breeds of animal for the F Word restaurant. The meat from them will be used in the final show of the series when the F Word’s two best local restaurants (two from the following list of categories: best local Italian, Indian, French, Chinese, Spanish, Thai, Americas, British or Rest Of The World) return to cook at the F Word restaurant for the overall title of “The F Word’s Best Local Restaurant 2009-2010”.
Overview of Janet's Animals
1) The rare breed Mangalitsa pigs were introduced to the UK in 2006. It is the rarest pig in the UK. Janet will take three pigs on after they have been weaned from their mother, when they are 2 months old. At this point her free range piglets will be around 40cm long. We will see them more than double in size to 100cm by the time they reach around 6 months and are ready for slaughter.
2) Dexter cattle are the smallest of the European cattle breeds and one of the smallest in the world. The animals are slow growing and graze on grassland. They are capable of producing incredible beef that is deep in flavour, richly moist and mouth wateringly tender. The breed originates from south-western Ireland and was introduced into England in 1882. Once very rare in the UK the Dexter has recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. They’re a great breed as they produce fantastic milk as well as meat.
3) Janet will also take on the rare breed Ixworth chicken. Created in 1932 by Reginald Appleyard the breed takes its name from the Suffolk village where he lived. It is an incredible breed that not only produces flavoursome meat but delicious eggs too.
Across the series Janet learns how to look after the animals and ensure their meat tastes delicious plus she’ll take them to her local country show to show them off, make some cheese and some unforgettable ice cream. |
